The operating of a quantum computer itself doesn’t take a lot of power. Most quantum processors use cryogenic refrigerators to operate, and can reach about 15millikelvin that’s colder than interstellar space. At this low temperature, the processor is superconducting, which means that it can conduct electricity with virtually no resistance. It is this refrigerant that constitutes a major part of the energy consumption. The D-Wave system at google consumes about 25 kilowatts, they say that the overall consumption of the system won’t change much even with the introduction of a 1000 quibit more.
